At the annual convention of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists held in Winnipeg in 1978, a motion was passed to establish a suitable memorial in honour of Reyburn R (Mac) McIntyre whose inspiration and leadership culminated in the foundation of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists. As a direct result of this motion a charitable foundation known as the Foundation for the Advancement of Orthodontist was established.

The CFAO Constitution was revised in 1994 and the current objectives are as follows: "the Foundation has been established to promote the advancement of the science and art of orthodontics and dental-facial orthopedics, to encourage and assist scientific and clinical research in educational institutions, to support the dissemination of scientific and clinical knowledge and improved technical skills, to further the public awareness of the benefits of orthodontic health care rendered by certified specialists in orthodontics and to encourage others to contribute to the advancement of orthodontics".

Under the CFAO Presidency of Dr. Yale Malkin, the Foundation undertook a major corporate fund raising campaign which brought the total surplus at the end of 1995/96 fiscal year up to $ 87,857.

The fund continues to grow and contributions can be made in many ways:

(a) McIntyre Fellowship Program
CAO members who make a one time, tax deductible contribution of $500.00 to the CFAO, are made McIntyre Fellows. This fund honours the memory of Dr. Reyburn R. McIntyre, founding president of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists.

(b) Annual Membership Renewal
The CAO makes it very easy for members when paying their annual Association membership dues to contribute an additional $50.00 which goes to the Foundation. Charitable receipts are sent for the Foundation portion.

(c) In Memorium and other donations
The CAO and any member may donate to the CFAO at any time. The CAO makes a donation to the CFAO in memory of members who have passed away. Contribution Forms are available from the CAO Office.

(d) Corporate Donations
Corporations are approached regularly and may donate any amount of money to the CFAO.
